At Bowen Rail Company, being based in the north Queensland town of Bowen is key to our operations and culture. We are part of the central Queensland community, and our staff and suppliers are part of the local community.
Our people choose to work with Bowen Rail Company to be at the leading edge of freight-rail operations. Our rollingstock is the most advanced in Australia and provides our business with efficiency and sustainability advantages.
While we are proudly a Bowen-based business, we create benefits for many other communities both in Australia and in Asia. The coal freight we transport is exported to international markets through the North Queensland Export Terminal. This helps provide energy security, as well as reliable, affordable and lower-emission electricity for emerging economies.
Providing access to affordable, reliable thermal energy from coal helps disadvantaged people in countries like India and others in South-East Asia improve their standard of living, so their people can enjoy the kind of things that people in developed nations take for granted, like lighting and air conditioning in their homes.

Living in Bowen
Bowen is a seaside town on the north coast of Queensland. The historic town is a launch point to the globally renowned Whitsunday Islands, and is home to spectacular beaches.
Its beach attractions include Horseshoe Bay, Grays Bay, Murray Bay, and Front Beach, where the azure-blue waters are a comfortable 22°C in winter and 28°C in summer.
The town was built around agriculture and has developed into a mining and energy-services centre for north Queensland. There are two state primary schools and a high school, and Catholic primary school.
Bowen is situated about 200 kilometres between Townsville and Mackay and has easy access to major regional airports.
